AL285 The Lizard Man of Bishopville
Original Airdate 06.22.2024 (On Podcast Audio Platforms)
On June 29, 1988, around 2:30 a.m., Christopher "Chris" Davis drove home after working the night shift at his local McDonald's. Driving along Browntown Road, which cuts through the dense woods of Scape Ore Swamp in South Carolina, Chris hears the pop of a flat tire on his car. As he finishes installing the spare, he notices something large and dark coming out of the trees, moving towards him about 30 yards away and swinging its arms. In an interview with The Item newspaper, Chris described seeing this humanoid creature with glowing red eyes close up, saying it was "green, wetlike, about seven feet tall and had three fingers... a red-eyed devil." Terrified, Davis ran to the driver's door and jumped in. Once inside, this bipedal beast was now right outside his window, where he could see it from the neck down. It then jumped up onto the roof of his car, where he could see its "rough-looking, black-fingernailed hands, sticking down from the windshield." The cryptid deeply grunts as Chris peels out, attempting to escape. As he estimated he was driving about 35-40 mph, this thing had caught up to the car and jumped onto the roof again, banging and clawing at it. The creature finally fell off as he swerved frantically, racing home. This encounter would become the best-known report of this impossible monster emerging from Scape Ore Swamp, but it was not the first, nor would it be the last. At least one verified account tells of a sighting occurring two years prior, and a handful of police reports describe run-ins that happened in the years following Davis's experience. Chris Davis never called it the "Lizard Man," but residents had already labeled some previously seen brute by that description. And when a local reporter printed the nickname, the moniker stuck in the broader public's imagination. Sheriff Liston Truesdale was the one person who vetted all the claims, took reports from witnesses, and investigated their stories. And we're fortunate and grateful to have on our show tonight the one person who spent time interviewing Sheriff Truesdale, questioned locals, visited locations, and wrote a book about it all, our friend and noted cryptozoology researcher and author Lyle Blackburn. Lyle's 2013 book, Lizard Man: The True Story of the Bishopville Monster, is the phenomenon's most comprehensive and detailed history. As the sightings and questions continue, perhaps the most puzzling and troubling thing is whether everyone sees the same being and whether it is reptilian, more Bigfoot-like, or some other horror altogether.

    I wonder if Stephen King heard this story back then? Being a clown phobe, he would have been freaked out. He lived in a wet area. The kids had to duck in to get to his lair. Things very similar to Pennywise.

    I went through all the other comments expecting a common observation of file 10 to be a dog barking over people trying to talk in a room. I wonder if more calm spirits were trying to speak as a more aggressive dominant one drowns them out.

    Patterson had tried to make a movie before this! Failed! The guy who made the suit, and the guy who wore the suit have both come forward and admitted it was a hoax! And passed a polygraph!! Thats just the beginning of the proof debunking P&G video!!

    • @Astonishinglegends
      @Astonishinglegends 16 днів тому

      Yes, we went over Patterson's prior film extensively in the series. Yes, Bob Hieronimous said he wore a suit. Yes, someone said they made it. Polygraphs are easy to cheat and not considered accurate. So, in the bigger, less simplified picture, you have a guy who owns a costume store saying he made the costume. That is the world's best free advertising, whether he made it or not. Then you have another guy saying, hey everybody, that was me! That vs tons of experts in the other corner makes it not such a black and white issue. Additionally, we met Bob Gimlin personally when we did this series. It's nearly impossible to imagine he doesn't believe the story he is telling is true. And if he was in the dark about a hoax, what kind of person would risk walking in front of a tracker with a rifle who is a crack shot in a costume like that? The real story is much more complex than a couple of simple 'confessions.'

    • @user-ze6er6dx9x
      @user-ze6er6dx9x 16 днів тому

      @Astonishinglegends lol oh yes! Thw really.story is P& Gs stories aren't quite the same!! Gimlin also Siad there was a concttction company making a road there at the same time! Bulldozers, backhoe, dump trucks, chainsaws. Lotsa men!!! And a bigfoot hanging out right beside them!!! One that got seen on Pattersons first attempt to find one! Right after he spent a yr trying to make a bigfoot movie but failed!!! This creature ( that notoriously avoids humans at all costs) was just hanging around all that. And wven walked nice and slow away to get a good look! It even looked back right at the camera for good measure!!! How fortunate!!! The only experts saying this is real, or that the 2 men that admitted they were part of it are lying are part of the bigfoot community! They WANT it to be real!! Good thing people are gullible and don't bother doing any research! It's easier to just blindly believe, and ignore all the facts that you don't want to hear!! I wanted this to be real as well! Thought it was! Till I did the research!! And 60 yrs later still no bigfoot! Even with technology as good as it is!! Still nothing!!! Not looking good!

    • @Astonishinglegends
      @Astonishinglegends 16 днів тому

      @@user-ze6er6dx9x Well, I hear your points, and they definitely validate further discussion about it, but I'd submit it's no more disproven than it is proven. We did a ton of research on this series, and on balance, we felt that it was more likely real than not, but I'll readily confess part of that was simply my gut instincts about Bob as a person and what it's like talking to him. That's not scientific in the least. I get that. All I'm saying is that you'll not convince me this is 'mystery solved' because of the costume confessions. Just as you'd like to see more evidence in the 'this may have been real' column, I'd like to see more in the 'it was a definite hoax.' - So we'll have to agree to disagree, but either way it is an absolutely fascinating story. I think the only way to get to the bottom of it after all of this time is to get our hands on the original film and have it forensically analyzed with modern technology. The film won't lie. All we have now are copies of copies. I have to get back to work! Thanks for listening no matter what you believe!

    • @user-ze6er6dx9x
      @user-ze6er6dx9x 16 днів тому

      @Astonishinglegends I'm not saying the creature doesn't exist! I've always believed they do! Or wanted to at least! That's why this was disappointing for me. The more a researched the .ore it looks like it just isn't what I thought! For what it's worth, I do hope I'm wrong on this one!

    Your comment was spot on regarding people who hear a claim where someone says they wore a suit and immediately think "welp, that's it. Time to hang it up this whole thing was faked, mystery solved". That is why a deep dive analysis like what you all are doing is so valuable. There is always context to statements people make, and the requirement for evidence to back it up is still there, just as it is for the party MAKING the claim...

    The "ghost in a jar" concept is where we're at with the UFO/UAP stuff in 2024. SOMETHING is going on. We have confirmed sightings. We have military pilots testimonies that something is out there. We have DoD whistleblowers saying it's real. But a majority of the population won't say they believe UFOs are real despite all this.

    My personal, biblically based, opinions: Black-Eyed Kids are demons; the reason why their clothes are so out-dated, and why their eyes are black, is because God is trying to protect us. He lays down rules, like, "You can't come in without permission, and you can't look normal; and if they're still dumb enough to let you in, well that's on them." How would you handle these black-eyed kid demons? Believe in Jesus, and command them to leave in His name.

    The frustrating part of this story as a listener, is that if this is true, and there are lots of people who are familiar with this 'hole', why can it not be authenticated? Where did they all go? Why didn't the story spread beyond this tiny microcosm of people in the local area (beyond Mel calling the radio show)?

    I played file 10 for my husband who is a hospice nurse. I just wanted to see his reaction (I was terrified). All I told him beforehand was that this was an EVP recorded in an empty room on a voice activated recorder. After listening, he said it reminded him of a dementia patient, going between mumbling to himself and angry yelling. I thought it was kind of a weird take until I listened to this part 3 and learned what you guys hear in that recording. Now I am picturing some poor old man ghost kind of rocking back and forth, angry that countless strangers have been traipsing through his house with all manner of devices and lights, questions and demands. Kind of a sad thought.

    mean I totally debunked the Patterson - Gimlin film and I have laid the challenge down and no one can deny it. I have spoken to key individuals and players in the Bigfoot community and they are aware of me and my debunking and they can't deny it or come up with plausible answers to the questions thrown at them. So I claim it. I, Jason Brazeal am the individual who has debunked the Patterson - Gimlin film and I did it in 3 ways, all of which cannot be disputed. The first was within the film itself. I destroyed the false narrative that FX artists did not have the technological capabilities at the time to pull off such a hoax. They most certainly did. In fact it's really interesting how it was done. Legendary FX man John Chambers played a part, it involved a mask from a Star Trek episode which aired in January of '67 called "The Galileo Seven" The neanderthal creatures depicted in this episode caught Roger Patterson's eye because he had self-published his Bigfoot book in '66 and was trying to put together an expedition documentary to sell to nature channels. He reached out to Chambers and went to Desilu Studios to visit him and basically they used that mask which Chambers had changed the hairpiece and added more hair on to it. There was a suit used from a Lost In Space episode and the mask and suit were a rental from Chambers essentially, but Roger wanted to customize the suit more so in addition to that he purchased one from Morris. Roger, being a cowboy was familiar with what wild animals tend to look like in terms of having mangy type hair, etc. So he took some clippers and shaved down some portions of the suit and used some of his horse supplies to assist in making the suit look a little more organic and real. There were arm extensions used underneath football shoulder pads which created a longer more proportional looking arm and created the illusion of a longer body and shorter legs. Charlie Gemora developed an old trick which is a sort of hand-me-down that is passed down through the FX community. What Gemora did was utilize a water bag invention as he called it that he would put inside the suit along with bulking material and this water bag would create the illusion of rippling muscles. This can be used for legs, chests, everywhere where there is noticeable locomotion essentially. This technique was developed in the 1940s and on Chambers advice he utilized this method. The footwear is obviously not the foot of an organic animal, the breats are obviously fake and are about 3 inches lower than they are supposed to be in terms of where the actual chest of the speciment is. The hairpiece is very obviously one similar to what Chambers typically uses. It looks like a bad messy Ringo Starr even. Very Chambers-esque. So anyway that is what is within the film which I have debunked and there are other things but this is a condensed summary to keep things cohesive. In short, it's a suit, it's a lie to say that it isn't or that it couldn't be and most of these people don't know what they're talking about when they discuss FX technology of the time. They don't understand illusions and FX work and how these illusions are pulled off and what was actually capable at the time. Key takeaway: Don't let your eyes fool you. And just because one FX job appears this way doesn't mean that another one will not require different methods and techniques that are relative to the needs of the specific illusion and it's execution. The second is the myth of Sasquatch being present in NAtive American Myth...it isn't but that's another discussion. THEN FINALLY THIS CANNOT BE DISPUTED BECAUSE IT CAN EASILY BE VERIFIED BY ANYONE. I mentioned that Roger had self-published his book "Do Abominable Snowmen Of America Really Exist?" in 1966. That is indisputable. he published it, it was in 1966 that he did this. Now, within the book there is an account of the Roe Incident which was a female Bigfoot encounter that Roger was obsessed with. Roger plagiarized a drawing of this Roe Incident that was originally done in 1961 for an article in a magazine by Ivan Sanderson. Morton Kuntsler was the artist. Roger Patterson plagiarized this image and published it in his 1966 book. Now, that is indisputable. That is a fact which is easily verified and you cannot argue that it didn't happen and that it didn't happen in 1966 because it did and it is all documented, it is in the copies of the book and is easily viewable. Well, this sketch is an exact, mirror duplication of what is contained in the Patterson - Gimlin film that was made in 1967 a year later. This is not possible. According to Probability and the Law of Averages there is no way that this would be possible. Unless that drawing that he plagiarized was actually, and covertly the storyboard for the film he hoaxed. That is the only answer that makes rational, logical sense. This is an indisputable fact. As if that wasn't stretching the bounds of the Laws of Probability we aren't done yet.... The sworn statement of the very same incident (which is the Roe Incident from 1955 told in 1957) contains an exact Play-By-Play of the Patterson - Gimlin film. This is indisputable. You cannot argue this because it is all on record and it predates the PG film by a decade. You cannot dispute this. You cannot dispute that Roger knew about it because he plagiarizzed the sketch and published it along with the account of the incident which contains the play-by-play of the PG Film. He literally published it in his book in 1966 a year prior. Let's dive in... ------ This, to the best of my recollection, is what the creature looked like and how it acted as it came across the clearing directly toward me. My first impression was of a huge man, about six feet tall, almost three feet wide, and probably weighing somewhere near three hundred pounds. It was covered from head to foot with dark brown silver-tipped hair. But as it came closer I saw by its breasts that it was female. (This is something Patterson was obsessed with the female breasts aspect of the tale which is what gave the idea and inspiration to put these anatomically incorrect features on his hoax costume) --------- Finally the wild thing must have got my scent, for it looked directly at me through an opening in the brush. A look of amazement crossed its face. It looked so comical at the moment I had to grin. Still in a crouched position, it backed up three or four short steps, then straightened up to its full height and started to walk rapidly back the way it had come. (Exactly as Patterson had instructed Bob H. to do and exactly what is seen on film) For a moment it watched me over its shoulder as it went, not exactly afraid, but as though it wanted no contact with anything strange. (The famous turn seen in the Patterson film and this is what gave inspiration for those actions within the film) ------ As you can see, not only does the sketch of this alleged incident that Patterson had plagiarized in his 1966 book look exactly what was shown on the film but the very description and dare I say dubious report of this unverified incident which Roe had reported is an exact play-by-play of the Patterson - Gimlin film. So if you ever wonder why it looked and behaved that way...well here is the script that Patterson used and the sketch is the storyboard that he used. I the portion of this account that gave Patterson the idea can be found in the portion in which Roe questions whether or not a movie was being made at the time. This is what sparked the idea and added as the catalyst for the entire hoax. So let's look at it again: As I watched this creature, I wondered if some movie company was making a film at this place and that what I saw was an actor, made up to look partly human and partly animal. But as I observed it more, I decided it would be impossible to fake such a specimen. Anyway, I learned later there was no such company near that area. Nor, in fact, did anyone live up Mica Mountain, according to the people who lived in Tete Jaune Cache. (Voila! This is what sparked the very idea for the hoax to begin with) Unless of course you believe that it’s possible that Roger stole a sketch of an incident and somehow magically filmed the exact same thing with the exact same sequence of events in an absolute play-by-play way 12 years later in a different location with an anatomically incorrect specimen. That’s not possible in any realm of rational thought.

      It’s laughable that you believe major players in the bigfoot community would hear you out at all, or care about your challenge. Seriously dude. Write a book about how you disproved the PG film and more people, myself included, would take you seriously. If you think you’re going to disprove the PG film in the UA-cam comment section of Bigfoot podcasts, god help you. This isn’t Reddit. Like, at least make a video for the UA-cam audience laying out your case. You could even show off screenshots of the responses you received to your challenge! Right now you come off as insane as people who claim they feed Bigfoot apples in their backyard. I’ve heard so many different stories about how the PG suit was made and where the parts were sourced from and who was in it and how it was all premeditated so many times now I can’t even keep the skeptical PG stories straight, and none of them line up with each other btw.

      @@coderexe30 Well it isn't hard to understand. The authenticity of this footage is disputed by the majority of experts in the field. While a select few remain convinced of its genuineness, they have become so entrenched in their beliefs that they are resistant to contrary evidence. In contrast, I have provided detailed documentation of the costume and prop used in the footage, as well as the manufacturing process. I have also highlighted the inconsistencies in the footage, such as the clearly visible frame F325, which reveals the manufactured footwear used in the suit. Furthermore, I have demonstrated the presence of shoulder pads and the misaligned breast placement. As a professional with experience in the FX industry, I can attest that the creation of illusions is a well-known art form. In this context, it is widely acknowledged within the FX community that John Chambers fabricated the footage for ANE Nature films. My expertise in the field allows me to provide a nuanced understanding of the techniques used at the time. In contrast, Munns' unwavering belief in the footage's authenticity is a testament to his lack of expertise in the field. His reputation within the FX community is questionable, and his work has been widely criticized. His exclusion from the industry since 1985, following his termination from Return of the Living Dead, further underscores his lack of credibility. I have thoroughly debunked the footage, and my critiques have prompted responses from Meldrum and Munns. Unfortunately, they have been unable to provide convincing counterarguments, leading me to characterize their claims as fraudulent. That's pretty blunt

      Yeah it's a whole different vibe when you're sitting there in the house, not expecting really anything at all to happen and hearing that on a recorder that you thought was gonna play pretty much nothing but silence. Still your depiction of it IS funny. I'd much rather have heard it in that context. - Scott
